What to Do After a Car Accident

Essential steps to protect yourself and file a successful claim after a car accident.

Stay Calm and Assess the Situation

The moments immediately following a car accident can be overwhelming. Your first priority should be to stay calm and assess whether anyone is injured. If there are serious injuries, call 911 immediately. Even if the accident seems minor, it's important to remain at the scene until you've exchanged information with the other driver.

Ensure Safety

If your vehicle is still operational and you're able to move it, pull over to a safe location away from traffic. Turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers. If your vehicle cannot be moved, stay inside with your seatbelt fastened until help arrives, unless it's unsafe to do so.

Call the Police

In South Carolina, you must report any accident that results in injury, death, or property damage exceeding $1,000. Even for minor accidents, having a police report can be invaluable when filing an insurance claim. The officer will document the scene, gather witness statements, and create an official record of the incident.

Document Everything

Take photos and videos of the accident scene from multiple angles. Capture images of: vehicle damage, license plates, the surrounding area, traffic signs or signals, weather conditions, and any visible injuries. Also write down the time, date, location, and a detailed description of what happened while it's fresh in your memory.

Exchange Information

Collect the following information from all parties involved: full name and contact information, driver's license number, insurance company and policy number, vehicle make, model, year, and license plate number. Also get contact information from any witnesses who saw the accident occur.

Contact Your Insurance Company

Notify your insurance company as soon as possible, ideally within 24 hours of the accident. Provide them with all the information you've gathered. Your insurance agent will guide you through the claims process and explain what coverage applies to your situation. Be honest and thorough when describing the accident.

Seek Medical Attention

Even if you don't feel injured immediately, some injuries may not become apparent until hours or days later. It's important to see a healthcare provider for a thorough examination. Keep all medical records and receipts, as these will be important for your insurance claim and any potential legal proceedings.

Keep Detailed Records

Maintain a file with all accident-related documents: police report, medical records, repair estimates, correspondence with insurance companies, photos and videos, witness statements, and receipts for any expenses related to the accident. This documentation will be crucial if you need to dispute a claim decision.
